The Little Man Under the Umbrella was an early symbol of the credit union movement. Working people organized financial cooperatives they owned themselves.
The idea was simple: people should have a say in the institutions that affect their economic lives. Instead of concentrating ownership and power at the top, a credit union puts ownership in the hands of its members.
At United Trades Federal Credit Union, we reimagined him for the trades.
Because more than a century later, ownership still matters.
We Reimagined Him for the Trades
Our version puts a tradesperson under the umbrella, representing the working people who own United Trades Federal Credit Union and the same idea that inspired the original:
United Trades isn’t just a financial institution serving tradeworkers. Our members own it.
Every member has an equal vote, regardless of how much money they have on deposit.
That’s the cooperative difference, and it’s what the Umbrella Man still represents to us:
People don’t have to give up their power to participate in the economy. They can own part of it.
